Opportunity Information: Apply for USDA NIFA CPPM 006536

The Crop Protection and Pest Management Competitive Grants Program (CPPM), run by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), is a discretionary grant program focused on solving high-priority pest problems affecting agriculture and communities. Its central goal is to strengthen food security and reduce the harm caused by pests by supporting projects that use Integrated Pest Management (IPM). In practice, this means funding work that blends multiple, science-based tactics (rather than relying on a single control method) to prevent, monitor, and manage pests in ways that make economic sense for producers, are environmentally responsible, and are safe for people.

A key theme of the program is tackling both emerging pest threats and long-standing pest challenges where better solutions are needed. CPPM is designed to help move pest management forward by encouraging approaches that can be improved through new and emerging technologies, along with more comprehensive IPM strategies. The intended outcomes are practical, affordable, and environmentally sound pest management practices that can be adopted in real-world settings, ultimately supporting agricultural productivity and healthier communities.

Only certain institutions are eligible to submit applications directly. Applications may be submitted only by colleges and universities as defined under Section 1404 of the National Agricultural Research, Extension, and Teaching Policy Act (NARETPA) (7 U.S.C. 3103). The eligibility definition has been expanded over time through federal legislation: amendments in the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 recognized Hispanic-serving Agricultural Colleges and Universities (HSACUs) and also allowed research foundations maintained by eligible colleges or universities to be included. Separate amendments to Section 406(b) of the Agricultural Research, Extension, and Education Reform Act (AREERA) added 1994 Land-Grant Institutions as eligible applicants as well. While only eligible colleges, universities, and their qualifying research foundations can apply as the primary applicant, award recipients are allowed to subcontract with other organizations that are not eligible to apply, as long as those partners are necessary to carry out the project work.

The funding listing associated with this opportunity is identified as USDA NIFA CPPM 006536 under CFDA number 10.329, with an award ceiling listed at $1,150,000.
